Paleo-fied Chocolate Cake

Added on December 16th, 2011 by our friend from http://cleaneatsinthezoo.wordpress.com/

Cooking Steps

Preheat oven to 325 degrees and grease a glass pan with coconut oil (I used an 11×7 pan, but you could use 9×13 for thinner cake or 9×9 for a thicker cake). Combine dry ingredients in medium bowl and set aside. Whisk eggs, melted coconut oil, vanilla and honey together and pour into dry ingredients. Stir until combined and pour into greased pan. Cook for about 25-30 minutes, depending on how thick your cake is going to be.

*Note: You could do a lot with this recipe: add in some dairy/soy free chocolate chips, add in some almond butter, stir in a bit of peppermint extract or just leave them be. They’re delicious!

  1. This is absolutely amazing! Reminded me of the “bad for you” but oh so delicious tasting box mix cakes :) Very quick to throw together and mix up too! No “weird” ingredients that I had to go and find either!

Going to try this out tonight, reviews from me and my daughter later ………..

OK. So, this is delish! Passed the 12yo tween test.
I have to say, this was very simple and quick.
Got home, started to put this together while dinner was cooking. Timmer went off while we were eating dinner. Took me 15mins to have the mix completed and 35mins to bake at 325 in a 8×8 baking dish.
Cake was very moist and fluffy, got 16 pieces out if this and will frezze for cravings.

  4. So glad you liked it!! It’s definitely a keeper!

  5. OMG!!! I just made this tonight & LOVED it!!! So yummy & definitely tastes like its made from a box mix! Thank you so much for this recipe!

  6. Yay! So happy you like it!

  7. Since this recipe is high in fat, I wanted to add more protein to complete a meal. I cut a piece of this cake & blended it in my Vanilla Whey Protein shake. YUMMY!!! It was so good I almost felt guilty! But I was happy to add an additional 50g of protein. =)

  8. Just tried this recipe and used only 3tsps of honey and 1tsp of orange extract instead of vanilla. Yummy! Lovely light texture. I am going to use this for my birthday cake next week :-)

  9. What do you think of using Stevia instead of honey? Will it still be as amazing?

  10. Super chocolatey! The texture is so moist and delicious! Next time I’ll add a little less chocolate but I loooooove this CAKE! I ate it with the paleo ice cream and it tasted GREAT! love it

  11. sooo good…i added 3 passion fruits to the recipe…YUMMY…thanx for sharing this with us

  13. Super tasty!! I used butter instead of coconut oil, and used an 8×8 pan, so it took about 35-40 minutes until mine was done. Really does taste like boxed cake mix!

  14. Sooooo yummy! I made them as cupcakes and they were a huge hit!

  15. Thankyou so much! This is a great recipe and so quick and simple to make especially cos I had all the ingredients already. One of the few recipes I found that doesn’t require coconut flour(as I don’t know where to find this yet). I’m 3 days into my paleo diet but was craving something chocolatey and indulging and this was perfect!! I put in only 1/2 cup honey but still tastes great- even better the next day! Such a treat without the guilt!! :)

  16. This is an excellent recipe! I make Almond Cream Cheese Frosting to go on top. It’s like an Almond Joy cake. Yum!

  17. I liked this especially with ice cream made from frozen bananas on top however it was too bitter from the cocoa for my husband.

  18. I have to say this is the best chocolate cake recipe I have found and super easy to make!

  19. Awesome!!! I added chocolate protein powder. It rocked!!!

  20. My husband made this for my birthday yesterday. He used butter and half hazelnut-half almond flour. Everyone thought it was amazing. There was not much conversation between cacophony of “mmmmm”, “oh wow”, “I can’t believe you didn’t use flour” and “You actually made this”? This was his first ever cake and he made it from scratch using whole, healthy ingredients. I want him to become a paleo chef now!

  21. I made it with coconut flour because I couldn’t find almond flour. It tasted fine but was very dry. Should I have added more honey or something?

  22. Coconut flour isn’t a straight substitute for other flours. You need to increase the number of eggs and moisture in a recipe if you want to use it, so that would account for the dryness :(

I’ve made this cake a number of times exactly as the recipe states, and it turns out great!

  23. Wow! This was delicious!! It satisfied my craving for a treat! I had to hold back from eating more than one piece but it wasn’t easy! This will be made again for sure!!

  24. This cake is by far the best dessert I have made since going paleo. I’ve made it 5 times, and each time I tweak it a little bit to make it even better. The texture comes out much better when the eggs are at room temperature and whisked alone before adding the other wet ingredients. Also, I recommend using some Trader Joe’s organic wild collected raw honey from India (if you can get it) along with regular raw honey for an even better flavor. I am baking a cake right now with organic free range duck eggs from my friend who keeps ducks and chickens (so lucky I know). I will post how it turns out.
